Skelmanthorpe Textile Heritage Centre
From medieval times to the Second World War Skelmanthorpe was a textile village.
This textile heritage is celebrated at the Skelmanthorpe Textile Heritage Centre, Queen Street – a small, privately-owned museum in a “one-up one-down” former weaver’s cottage. The downstairs family living quarters have been maintained and furnished as a weaver’s family home c1900. Upstairs is an authentic hand-loom, in working condition, along with fascinating displays and memorabilia.
Denby Dale Parish Council (with funding from the East Peak Innovation Partnership) have produced 2 DVDs (available at local libraries) filmed in the Centre and featuring the owner Leslie Robinson and his friend and fellow historian Stanley Sheead. Clips from these DVDs can be accessed below.
