3 The Buried Bottle

When building of the school began in 1872 a bottle was buried under the cornerstone. In the early 2020s the bottle was discovered and passed to the Hands on History group. One member painstakingly unpicked the contents of matted paper to reveal pages of newsprint. These were revealed to be pages from local newspapers of 1872. Further research into the ceremony of laying the cornerstone revealed details of these buried newspapers. The contents of the bottle are now held by West Yorkshire Archives (Kirklees).
