St. Aidan's CE Primary School

Mary Constance Haigh Photograph Collection.

Photographs collected by Mary Constance Haigh over her years as a teacher and Headmistress at St. Aidan’s.

Born in August 1904, Mary was the daughter of Joseph Haigh, the co owner of H&J Haigh - Joiners and Ironmongers in Commercial Road (now Solos). She was a pupil at St. Aidan’s between 1909-17 and thereafter Huddersfield Municipal High School for Girls. She went on to qualify as a teacher and, after a short spell at Skelmanthorpe Council School, Mary was appointed as a teacher at St. Aidan’s in 1927. She became Headmistress in 1950 and after 36 years at the school retired in 1963.

Mary never married and while being a tall and appearing, at times, a  formidable lady she always cared for her pupils  and remained focussed on their  academic improvement and long term well being.
