Flack's Drift Mine/Hayroyds Colliery

Flack's Drift Mine/Hayroyds Colliery

Started i 1908 and had a series of 4 coal mines until 1947 when they started the Hayroyds mine in the Whinmoor seam.

The first video shows the last coal being hauled out of the West Drift, the second producing drift of the mine, in June 1986 and then the +2” coal being treated in the washer which had been installed 1960.

The East Drift was driven in 1978 was equipped with a conveyor and from 1986 to 1994 a series of loading machines and cutter were developed at the mine.

In 1989 instead of separating the dirt band in the seam at the face all the seam was loaded out washed and the dirt crushed and pumped back underground.

The second part of the video shows the additions to the washer to enable it to deal with this change.

The last part of the video shows the machines working underground as they did from 1994 to 2012 when the mine closed.
